Southern Rural Water is responsible for:
- Managing the delivery of water to the Werribee, Bacchus Marsh and Macalister Irrigation Districts and maintain the channels, pipelines and drains for these Districts
- Implementing the Government's regulations and policy for groundwater and surface water resource management, in accordance with delegated powers from the Water Act 1989. This means we assess license applications and, if approved, issue licenses to construct new farm dams and bores. We manage new and existing groundwater and surface water licenses
- Harvesting, storing and managing water in Glenmaggie, Narracan, Blue Rock, Melton, Merrimu, Pykes Creek and Rosslynne reservoirs. We also manage the recreation facilities at most of these storages
We supply untreated water to:
- Farmers, graziers and growers who use gravity irrigation, groundwater and river diversion water supplies
- Gippsland Water and Western Water
- Power generating companies in the Latrobe Valley
These are important responsibilities, demanding sustainable management of water resources and nurturing the businesses, communities and environments that support and depend on them.
Our main business centres are located in Maffra, Werribee and Warrnambool and we employ almost 150 people, including a network of field staff.
