Southern Water is the largest water and wastewater provider in Tasmania, focused on providing lasting value to its communities through sustainable water and wastewater solutions.
The corporation was created in 2009, following implementation of the State Government’s Water and Sewerage Industry reforms. It is one of three, council owned, regional water corporations which now provide water and wastewater services across Tasmania.
Southern Water currently services over 90,000 customers with assets and infrastructure including: 49 Wastewater Treatment Plants, 38 Drinking Water Systems, 3,266km of water pipelines and 2,181 km of sewer mains.
The corporation’s operations cover 240,000 people areas across 25,000 square kilometres in the following areas: the cities of Hobart, Clarence and Glenorchy and the municipal areas of Brighton, Central Highlands, Glamorgan Spring Bay, Huon Valley, Kingborough, Derwent Valley, Sorell, Southern Midlands and Tasman.
In the first year of operations (2009/2010) Southern Water delivered a Capital Works Program of $34.2million, ensuring the vital water and wastewater infrastructure keep pace with growth, development and community expectations.
