The Barossa Council’s CWMS System

The Barossa produces about 2.1million litres of effluent a day.

Effluent is transported from homes and businesses to The Barossa Council’s treatment plants via pipes and pumping stations. Commercial and industrial waste, called trade waste, is also discharged under licence into the CWMS system.

About 50% of The Barossa’s sewage is treated at the Nuriootpa Treatment Plant and the remainder is treated in number of lagoons situated near townships.

Nuriootpa Waste Water Treatment Plant

The Barossa Council owns and operates all treatment plant/lagoons and a network of some 128 kilometres of sewers and 29 sewage pumping stations. All Treatment plants and lagoons are licensed by EPA SA.

Regular monitoring and maintenance of our CWMS system is carried out to ensure its effective performance and safety. This program includes identifying and fixing structural weaknesses and removing obstacles to flow such as tree roots.

We continually improve the treatment plants to ensure that they harness changing technology to treat effluent, increase opportunities for water recycling that lessen the impact on the environment, currently 100% of water entering the CWMS system can be recycled.

The Barossa Council is committed to reducing environmental impacts on the environment and has an average annual capital works budget of 1.2 million dollars to achieve this.
